Unfortunatly I have to agree with the masses, mainly as I am guilty for bad practice and paid the price byt loosing the tip of my index finger to one of these machines. I did exactly what this guy is doing and the planer whipped it out of my hand and... well you know the rest. Needless to say, wear protective equip, use pushsticks and blocks. Please, dont make my mistake.

You want to avoid face jointing???? WTF?? And you call yourself a shop teacher? All the planer will do to a wide, cupped board is create a smooth, cupped board. You need to face joint first to establish a reference surface, then edge joint one edge. Then use your planer to do the other side. A table saw is used on the other edge. This guy is a moron because he doesn't use safety glasses, not because he face jointed!

This guy calls himself an expert? No blade guard,no safety glasses, no push blocks. It's one thing if you want to do it this way. I am sure I am guilty of at least one of these things but I have never put out a video showing others how do to do things incorrectly.

I am a shop teacher. This guy is moron. You want avoid face jointing! Use a planer. Especially if your not even going to use push blocks and run your fingers over the moving knives.I am going to have my class disect this video and point out all the WRONG ways to joint.

I'm no expert, but how many things did he do wrong?1. Headphones are nice, but the risk of hearing damage over time is nothing compared to a splinter in the eye. Use eyewear.2. A respirator would be smart as well, especially with a tool that creates so much dust.3. No pushblocks. Using downward pressure with the fingers, towards the spinning knives. If that board splinters apart, where do the fingers go?
